Just tape up the pattern and transfer paper, trace the lines and then paint the areas with the corresponding colors. It’s just like coloring in a coloring book. How long will it take? You’ll not only be done before you know it, but it should only take about a weekend. Author: Daryl Marples - Date: March 5, 2006
- Fast, Easy, Affordable Makeovers
Think about it. Have you ever worn a sandal on one foot and a boot on the other? No? Then have you tried wearing a black leather glove on one hand with a red wool mitten on the other? Okay, probably not. Since our bodies have lots of pairs we tend to feel most comfortable when we wear matching pieces of clothing or accessories. Doing that gives our physical appearance the symmetry to which we all innately gravitate. The same concept applies to our homes. Every room looks better and feels more balanced if it is decorated with matching pairs. Author: Lauri Ward - Date: March 12, 2006

- How To As Strip Old Wallpaper
Wallpaper stripping technique: - Start by stripping the outer face off of the wallpaper, sometimes this is a vinyl coating and other times, it is just a dense layer of paper. This should leave only the backing material and glue. Prepare a wallpaper stripping solution consisting of water and a little dishwashing detergent. Wallpaper stripping solution should be sponged on the backing material and allowed to soak (re-wetting as necessary) for at least 10 minutes. A cheap garden-type sprayer will tremendously speed up the soaking process. Attempt to remove the backing material with a wallpaper scraping tool or alternately any flat bladed tool such as a wide putty knife. If this fails, re-wet the backing and allow to soak longer. The more you soak, the easier the job.
- If the above stripping solution is not working well enough, you may also try a solution of 2 parts water to 1 part white vinegar and use the same technique. This stripping solution is only effective against wallpaper installed using wheat or starch based wallpaper adhesives. If the adhesive is unknown, use one of the below listed strippers.
- If you have really stubborn wallpaper, obtain some Safe and Simple online, or Dif from your local home improvement store, and follow the bottle's directions to remove the remaining backing material.
- If you plan on painting the area you just stripped, you must ensure that all the glue behind the backing is removed. To tell if there is still glue remaining, wet the wall and feel it. Any slimy areas mean there is glue left over. To remove any remaining glue, mix 2 tablespoons of liquid fabric softener into a gallon of water and scrub. You must also carefully rinse the entire wall surface so there are no traces of paste or wallpaper stripper remaining behind, before you paint.
- If your vinyl/dense paper facing does not want to peel off the backing, you may try to dry peel it off the wall which may or may not cause wall damage. You can also obtain a paper scoring tool, such as the Paper Tiger, to score the paper and perform the above steps for removal. Paper scoring tools can damage the drywall underneath the wallpaper, but are gentler on plaster walls. Ensure you read the directions on the package for complete instructions, but a good rule of thumb is to let the tool do the work. Additional lateral pressure will cause undo damage to the wall surface. An alternate method is to use a razor to score a series of Xs into the wallpaper surface. This requires a careful touch as to not damage the underlying wall surface. In some cases, the scoring and soaking steps will promote or enhance the stripping of the facing material, so after this step, attempt to removing the facing material again. If still no success, you will have to perform repetitive score, soak, and strip steps to remove your wallpaper.

- Celebrate the Beauty and Timelessness of Unique Pieces of History Wallcovering
New Wallcoverings Collection Uncovers Hidden Treasures From 16th 17th and 18th centuries
American homes are filled with antiques and objects of historical character reflecting a love of the past and the styles that have withstood the test of time. Raymond Waites has captured these classic looks in Vintage Documents, his new wallcovering collection for Imperial.
“I’ve scoured the stalls of flea markets from East Hampton, Long Island to Marche Aux Puces in Paris, the forerunner of all flea markets, to unearth treasures that was the start of my vintage wallcoverings,” said Waites, who also designed Vintage Luxe for Imperial. “This collection is a combination of classic interiors, textures and elegant, rich vintage florals and is the most romantic approach I have taken in my vintage style to date.”
The patterns are luxurious yet comfortable providing looks that fit into a formal or casual setting. Today’s homes are a blend of motifs where relaxed living takes place in all rooms, no matter what the décor, but Vintage Documents will put a definitive touch to any interior.
“The richness of the colors and the classic designs in Vintage Documents make a strong statement,” said Carolyn Resar, vice president of marketing and design for Imperial Home Decor Group. “These are images of another time and era and admired and cherished for centuries. It’s natural they would add a dramatic dimension to a room.”
One of the motifs –Biblioteca is wooden shelves holding volumes of Hamlet, Les Miserables, Passage to India, Leaves of Grass and other great works of literature. At quick glance you feel like you’ve entered a library. Dames Et Monsieurs is a fashion story with figures of royalty in tiles – sultans, queens, emperors - circa 1760, dressed to the nines. Empire shawl is another design taken from royalty. French country is a tapestry document and Pompadour is a damask with stripe. The designer’s love of architecture shows in Classical Finials –a collection of finials that resemble the tops of grand structures found all over the world.
“Raymond has also taken country gingham and added roosters surrounded by wreaths of flowers to enhance and revitalize an ordinary document, “said Resar. “He’s also included vintage plaids in this collection but the colorways he uses such as lacquer, nutmeg and gooseberry, add a very unusual look to a rather familiar design.”
As is classic Waites, there is a cheetah print, an animal scenic from the South Seas and several vintage florals including Bloomsbury, Lyon (circa 1600) and Les Roses de Loire. All of the patterns in Vintage Documents come in a variety of colors reminiscent of nature and of natural materials such as rouge, antique, platinum, obsidian, maize, khaki and butter.
The collection includes Biblioteca, Empire Shawl and Lyon borders and an Afrique border featuring jungle animals amid columns and posts.

- DAVID HARDEN PAYS HOMAGE TO HIS BELOVED HOMETOWN IN FOLK ART NATURE WALLPAPER BY DAVID
David Harden, the self-taught primitive artist behind Imperial’s ‘Folk Art by David’ wallcovering collection, was born in rural Ohio and draws his inspiration from the rolling hills and peaceful scenery of his hometown. His early years were spent on farms, and this childhood experience helped to shape his style, which has been described as “simplistic” and “down home.”
A few of his favorite images that are depicted in his nature wallcovering designs are tall whimsical cats adorned with bow ties and necklaces, starry night skies, sheep covered with American flag blankets, quaint scenes of homes atop grassy covered slopes, snowmen, and fruit – pineapples, pears and apples.
“These are images that make it possible to have some fun with the art,” said Harden, who lives in Chillicothe, Ohio, just 15 miles from his birthplace of Waverly. “They are based on fond memories of a part of Ohio that I absolutely love.”
Just turning the pages of Imperial’s Folk Art collection will bring a smile to anyone’s face as the artist’s interpretation of country life is both charming and whimsical.
“Imperial Home Decor Group is thrilled to introduce David Harden’s first wallcoverings collection,” said Carolyn Resar, vice president of marketing and design for IHDG. “No matter what the subject, the finished product is always painted in the warm tones and distressing David has become known for. The sheer warmth and love that is conveyed by his art will help to create a very cozy home.”
Although Folk Art is his first wallpaper collection, David’s work has been licensed through many national companies such as Cass Woodworking, Evermore Candles, ESC Trading, Raghu Exim Trades, Legacy Publishing Group, Paula’s Primitive Rugs and Roland Flag Company.
He began painting on his grandfather’s farm on scraps of boards he found lying around. The idea of “antique wood” fits his style, and today he uses a series of steps to give his work the illusion of age.
His folk art collection brings a clean and understated twist to traditional country designs and offers an array of borders in many sizes. One border is 27 inches high depicting David, Mary, Arthur and Elaine – four rather charming and cool cats. Two smaller borders - Angels Gather Here and God Shed His Grace, and a 20 inch My Home Towne border – all depict the sleepy picturesque village inspired by the artist’s hometown.
Coordinating sidewalls include traditional stripes and plaids, stars and moons, crackle sky texture, and willow trees, which is also the subject of the American Willow Mural. This mural has four 18” wide panels are 8 ft. high and will transform an ordinary foyer, informal kitchen or dining area into rooms with a stylish Folk Art theme.
Imperial’s Folk Art by David is available at mass retail, home centers and independent dealers. For more information, consumers can call the U.S. toll free line at 800/539-5399.

- INNOVATIVE NEW WALLCOVERING BRINGS SIMPLICITY TO HANGING & REMOVING WALLPAPER
Imperial Visions, a revolutionary new concept in wallcoverings, delivers fresh styles, fashionable textures and ease of application all in one collection – the Imperial Visions Metropolitan Collection. Imperial Visions, a non-woven wallpaper, combines the ease of paste-the-wall technology with the popular appeal of a woven fabric texture look.
Imperial Home Decor Group (IHDG) delivers this breakthrough concept that consists of just three easy steps: simply apply the wallpaper paste to the prepared wall, hang the paper dry and trim. No more water trays and fewer tools, coupled with no soaking or wet paper, translates to easy installation. The care that wallpaper hanging necessitates is now reduced to a quick, clean and easy course of action with papers that highlight and accentuate the look of textural fibers.
“By using the specially formulated paste and primer, the product is dry strippable and removing wallpaper is effortlessly,” said Carolyn Resar, vice president of marketing and design for IHDG. “Due to the ease of installation and removal, Imperial Visions offers extended freedom for those looking to change the look of a room more often. Anyone who can use a paint roller will appreciate the process, and those who love design and dimension will admire the stylish patterns.”
Imperial Visions boasts fashionable contemporary, traditional and transitional designs and sophisticated faux textures designed with easy to match patterns to further make the hanging process effortless. Design motifs include geometric shapes, poppy flower prints, berry, leaf, vine and celestial patterns, basket-weave, crinkle stripe and paper textures.
The key to this no-fuss installation is the non-woven substrate, EasyLifeTM by Alhstrom, that will not expand, shrink or separate at the seams. The product’s strength is derived from the combination of natural and synthetic fibers resulting in durable, easy to maintain, and very stylish wallcoverings.
“Imperial Visions is one of the most exciting new products to be introduced and will be beneficial for the entire industry as well as consumers, “ said Resar. “By extracting the process of soaking and pasting and the time spent waiting for paste to activate, we’re bringing a whole new dimension to the market. The maximum benefits of wallpaper – its beauty, affordability, and durability – will stand out as they should with the hanging process made so much simpler.”
“Imperial Visions is designed for everyone – novices and professionals – people of all generations,” said Resar. “But for first time users and a new generation of homeowners, especially those between the ages of 25-34 who have yet to embrace wallcoverings because they find the installation process daunting, this is what they have been waiting for.”
The Imperial Visions Metropolitan Collection is available at home centers and independent dealers as both in-stock and special order product. For more retailer information, consumers can call 800-539-5399, or visit www.ihdg.com.

- Le Module By Sterling Prints Is A New Decor Concept In Wallcoverings & Wallpaper Borders
Le Module, an innovative new contemporary wallcovering approach by Sterling Prints, offers endless possibilities for interpreting spaces. Packaged in rolls and in rectangular and square modules, the combination of presentation brings a new dimension to the wallpapering process.
With Le Module, Italian designer Diego Grandi has accomplished a thorough work of designing a decorative typology, through reinventing patterns, applications and packaging.
The true novelty of Le Module is its use as an extraordinary decorative motif tool. With Le Module it is possible not just to juxtapose the paper, but to position it spaced, according to requirements, whether using the classical roll proposal (53 cm high), or with the modules (available as 20.87” x 20.87” squares and 20.87” x 10.44” rectangles). The complete collection boasts a broad range of stunning geometrics in five distinct designs, as well as solids, involving 22 colors.
“Le Module is a revolution “on paper”, yet also practical, “ said Carolyn Resar, vice president of design and marketing for Imperial Home Decor Group. “It brings great beauty to a room as does traditional wallcoverings and wallpaper borders, but it takes on another dynamic beyond a decorative one through the unlimited variety of applications and combinations.”
The care that wallpaper hanging necessitates is now transferred with extreme ease to this new concept of wall décor. The distances between one module and another, the horizontality or verticality, the orthogonality and also the irregular angles and even possible overlapping to give a patchwork effect, are all variations at the consumers’ disposal, who are nowadays inclined to DIY.
Striking modern designs and solids called Sainte Monique, Currutchet, Chandigarh, Carthage and Tunisie, in shades such as violet, mint green, burnt orange, ivory, pale blue, pink, blue, and beige are in this very different collection. The application of the papers have the decorative signature of famed architect Le Corbusier, well known for his modulor system which makes possible an infinite number of harmonious variations within a unit of construction. “Le Module is a very exciting concept in wallcoverings that bring great flexibility and originality to the decoration of a room,” said Resar. “The coordinated possibilities, the very clean, yet elegant lines and the added element of incorporating empty spaces into a design plan, makes Le Module a one-of-a-kind collection for today’s homes.”
Le Module by Sterling Prints is available at mass retail, home centers and independent dealers. For more retailer information, consumers can call 800-539-5399, or visit www.ihdg.com.

- TREASURES OF WINTERTHUR CAPTURES THE EXTRAORDIARY BEAUTY OF THE du PONT ESTATE IN NEW WALL PAPER COLLECTION
The Winterthur Museum, once home to three generations of the du Pont family, provided the design and color inspirations for Imperial Home Decor Group’s latest wall paper collection - “Treasures of Winterthur” - under the Albert Van Luit brand.
Henry Francis du Pont, the estates last owner, was an exceptional man who devoted his life to collecting antiques and interior design, showcasing his world-renowned collection and beautifully landscaped gardens. He orchestrated the assembly and installation of the antique collections in up to 200 rooms with period woodwork from the thirteen colonies. This is the largest and richest collection of American decorative arts in the world, spanning two centuries of creative productivity from about 1640 to 1860.
The second great collection at Winterthur is the gardens. Henry Francis du Pont inherited his family’s love of nature and discovered the hidden natural treasures of Winterthur’s woodlands. He was extensive in his study of plants to ensure color, growth, and stability for the Delaware environment. In the gardens as in the house, natural beauty was a close parallel to be reflected year round. Much like the museum, the landscaped gardens portray one of the country’s great designers. Opened to the public in 1951, Winterthur enchants and delights visitors and has provided a wealth of exquisite designs for the Winterthur collections by Van Luit.
"Treasures of breathtaking pattern spill from the pages in this book and we are delighted to once again bring the beauty and history of Winterthur to the consumer,” said Katherine Krage, design director of Van Luit for Imperial Home Decor Group. Van Luit is licensed with the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum and has reproductions that capture the spirit of the original documents.
“Treasures of Winterthur” by Van Luit commemorates the golden anniversary of the great country estate in Delaware. Included are designs taken from silk damasks, palampores, French floral trails, crewelwork, embroidered fabrics and the inspiration from the gardens surrounding the estate. The designs are adaptations that capture and reflect the beauty and excellence of this historic home.
A few highlights in this book are Port Royal, Santana, Larisa, Carroll Stairhall, Palampore and Cathay Chinois Mural. Port Royal is adapted from a hand painted Chinese mural dating between 1750 – 1775. It is shown in the Port Royal Entrance of the mansion. Port Royal portrays exotic motifs of peonies, flowering branches, and bamboo stalks. Santana was inspired by the beautiful botanical gardens, Larisa, derived from Pompeian frescos, the Etruscan pattern displays tendril vines with linear arabesques and songbirds. Larisa was inspired from the fanciful French block cartouche in the Federal Parlor of the museum.
Carroll Stairhall is a hand painted wall, virtually moved from the Ezra Carroll house and placed into a 2-story stairhall of the mansion. Its exotic and whimsical scenes recall the design of French wall paper. Palampore is a French floral trail adapted from a fabric design called the tree of life, and the ever popular Cathay Chinois mural is an eight panel scenic adapted from a late eighteenth-century wallcovering of Chinese origin exhibited in the museum’s Philadelphia bedroom.
“Treasures of Winterthur” by Albert Van Luit is available at independent dealers, and through interior designers. For more information, consumers can call 800-539-5399 or visit www.ihdg.com.

- WALLPAPER COLLECTION CELEBRATES SIMPLER TIME
Raymond Waites, who is recognized as the leader and founder of the American Country movement in the 1980’s, has designed New American Country, a wallpaper collection by Imperial that marks his return to the well-loved things of this country’s past.
“New American Country is like a visit to an old friend – a style that has been accepted around the world for the past twenty years,” said Waites. “It’s a style I was a part of rediscovering in the 1980s and has been the cornerstone of my creative journey.”
Waites believes this is an important time to rediscover the simple, familiar heirlooms such as hand-stitched quilts, antique ladder-back chairs, painted hope chests and family china. These are welcome symbols through which tradition and history come alive.
“New American Country is a contemporary country wallpaper collection that celebrates the best American tradition, “ said Carolyn Resar, vice president of marketing and design for Imperial Home Decor Group. “Raymond Waites signature style and rich color palette is very evident, as is his sense of humor with many whimsical patterns that feature bucolic cows, country bear toile, and puppies on parade.”
A highlight of the collection, the Inch by inch border, will delight parents and children alike. It serves as a growth chart with room for date, name, age and height. As a compliment to the Countryside Meadow sidewall, the growth chart is perfect for a kitchen or den. Or, pair with Puppy Play to create a charming setting for a child’s room.
There are wonderful patterns for the kitchen, the new heart of the home, including pastoral scenes, country crockery, fruit baskets, vintage plaids, checkerboards and bowls overflowing with strawberries.
“New American Country is a wallpaper collection about the enduring tradition of the American experience, recreating what is best in our past, as well as embracing the exciting new Raymond Waites American country style for today,” said Resar.

- DECORATIVE WALLPAPER BORDER PRODUCTS ARE MORE THAN JUST ACCENTS
Imperial Home Decor Group (IHDG), the world’s leading manufacturer and marketer of residential wallcoverings and wallpaper border, is seizing the consumer trend for decorative products by unveiling two innovative, easy-to-use lines – Instant Stencils™ and The Big Look Borders™ – at the National Hardware Show. “We know that consumers consider wallpaper borders and stencils as two of the top three leading-edge decorative products,” explains Jim Holthus, vice president of marketing for IHDG. “We developed our Instant Stencils and The Big Look Borders lines to provide consumers with the same hot decorative looks, but in ways that require much less time and effort on their part.”
Hand-painted stencils without the paint Steady hands, artistic talents, time and even paint are no longer prerequisites for the gorgeous looks of hand-painted stencils. The innovative Instant Stencils™, available under the Sunworthy brand, is a line of multi-colored lithographs in a variety of popular looks, such as floral motifs and mystical designs, that can be “rubbed-on” nearly any surface in three easy steps. Simply position, rub and peel the designs. A special seam roller tool “rubs” the design onto nearly any designated surface – glass, ceramic tile, wood, furniture, and more. The designs are then peeled from the acetate sheet backing, leaving a hand-painted look without the mess and hassle of ordinary stencils.
A whole-room, custom look can be easily achieved with the line’s 10 coordinated style groupings in a variety of sizes that each include: two strip designs in 2-inch, 4-inch or 5.25-inch height, as well as three-packs of one small accessory and a single-pack of one large accessory. Also available are ten freestanding designs in various sizes.
The Instant Stencils line is priced at suggested retail from $6.99 to $11.99. The line will be available in early 2001 to home centers, paint and wallpaper retailers, and specialty stores nationwide.
Big borders come out of hiding
What were once used as decorative accents are now making their way as viable, stand-alone design statements. Up until now large (more than 13.5-inch height) wallpaper borders were tucked away in wallpaper books. But, as the trend for these big borders became more popular, consumers began demanding quicker and easier ways to find these decorative options. Now, these popular looks can be found at-a-glance with IHDG’s new The Big Look Borders™ line, a color-coded, peggable packaging program.
Set to launch at the National Hardware Show, the line consists of 22 designs in three of the most popular categories: kitchen, kids and scenics. Kitchen features traditional motifs, including florals, fruits and marketplace scenes, in 13.5-inch height borders. There’s even a whimsical rooster border from artist Tracy Porter. - DISNEY’S WINNIE THE POOH, TIGGER, PIGLET AND EEYORE DEBUT DISNEY WALLPAPER
Some of the most familiar and best loved characters of all time can now become part of the decorating scheme in a child’s room with Disney wallpaper - in an instant! Imperial Home Decor Group (IHDG), which introduced Instant Stencils™ under the Imperial brand last year, has added Disney’s Winnie The Pooh to this very popular line of easy to apply home decorating accessories.
Available in a variety of sizes and designs, a child’s space can be transformed with these delightful and colorful figures by creating a border, a design over a bed, a wall accent, or any customized look to fit a room’s design. For added enjoyment, Instant StencilsTM can be applied to your child’s dresser, headboard, desk, chair or mirror! The possibilities are as fun as the characters themselves. In moments, you can transform a child’s room with the magic of Disney’s Pooh and Instant StencilsTM.
“Instant StencilsTM is one of our most popular new products and we’re delighted to introduce a line of characters that both parents and children love,” said Carolyn Resar, vice president of marketing and design for IHDG. “We know that consumers consider stenciling one of the most popular home décor techniques and now they have the flexibility and ease to be creative and bring walls to life in their children’s rooms.”
Instant StencilsTM require a fraction of the application and clean-up time of regular stencils or hand painting projects and are “rubbed-on” in three easy steps. Simply position, rub, and peel the liner sheet. A dry transfer of the design begins when pressure is applied from the applicator tool. After the design is rubbed onto the surface, the liner sheet is peeled back leaving a customized look without the mess of ordinary stencils. The product is designed in coordinating groups to allow the consumer creative expression and endless combinations of application.
“The detail and color are amazing, and Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and Eeyore literally jump off the wall and into the room,” said Resar. “Imagine the fun a child can experience after personalizing an object he or she designed with a much loved Disney character.”
Instant Stencils™ come on clear liner sheets and can be applied to many surfaces including painted walls, stained wood, glass, furniture and more, using a special adhesive which creates a permanent, washable bond after 48 hours.
The packaging offers some creative suggestions of how to put the different pieces together to create multiple looks. Disney’s Winnie the Pooh Instant StencilsTM come in a variety of sizes that include: strip designs, large accessories and small accessories designed to be cut apart and used as accent pieces.
The Instant StencilsTM line is priced at suggested retail from $10.99 to $18.99 and is available at select home centers, paint and wallpaper retailers and specialty stores nationwide. For more information, consumers can call 1-800-539-5399.
