Not all doors are made to be solid and some are actually more glass than anything else making door curtains necessary. Door curtains are made in several different sizes and often need to be custom made to match the other décor. They do not usually come as part of a curtain set that may contain curtains for the rest of the room. Some doors have small windows that only take up about a third of the entire door space. Other doors like patio doors really are just sliding large windows. Vertical blinds are often used for windows this large because they give totally privacy when needed or open to allow for easy access to the sliding door.

Many building codes require that all doors to the exterior have a window to permit you to see who is at your door before you open it. These windows are often covered with thin sheer door curtains that enables you to view through it to see outside without being clearly seen. They are hung by running a rod through a small fold at the top and not using additional hooks. They are not usually a very complicated design and are usually quite short in length not covering more than the small window.

Door curtains are also used on some large interior doors like French doors. These are large solid glass doors used to separate one room from another. They are often used between a kitchen and dinning room. The curtains used on them are very often sheer providing some view but the door still provides sound privacy.
