April 22, 2003 By: Laurie Simpson A curtain rod and hooks are needed to support most types of curtains you find in homes todayCurtains provide an important function for our homes protecting us from sun, heat and prying eyes. The majority of curtains require some form of curtain rod to secured and hang them from. The type of curtain rod can vary depending on the style of curtains being hung. The curtains will determine the type of rod needed to hang them from. Some are a very simple round dowel that allows rings to be placed over it and the curtains left to hang freely from the rings. The curtains on these rods are manually drawn and have no opening and closing drawstrings. This type of curtain is often displayed in a swag form hanging freely from the curtain rod. A more complicated form of curtain rod involves a pulley system to open and close the curtains and a pronged hook attachment that secures the curtains to the rod. This is used for a more formal type of curtain that is pleated at the top where the pronged hooks slide in before attachment to the rod. The drawstrings hang vertically down the wall beside the curtains providing an easy opening and closing method. This type of rod may house several tracks allowing multi-layers of drapery to be hung from the same rod. The type of curtains you select will determine the type of curtain rod they need to support them and how you will open and close them. Most places that sell curtains can also provide you with the rods you need and the installation if necessary.
