American Standard Puts a Twist on its 2005 Ugliest Bathroom Contest With an Added Search for the Oldest American Standard Toilet

Ugly and old could win big in American Standard’s 2005 Ugliest Bathroom Contest, which kicks off today. The annual contest, in which owners of ugly bathrooms compete for a dream bathroom makeover from American Standard, has expanded this year to include a search for the oldest American Standard toilet.

Prizes for 2005 take on a vintage theme. The owner of the bathroom judged the ugliest will win a beautiful bathroom remodel including classic vintage styled fixtures from American Standard and complementary design services from nationally recognized interior designer Barbara Schmidt. The owner of the American Standard toilet determined to be the oldest will receive a virtually maintenance-free toilet from the company’s Champion® series in a choice of vintage, traditional or transitional styles.

“Many design trends that were first made popular in the 1920s and 30s are back in vogue again, so we’re offering homeowners the opportunity to update their bathrooms with beautiful vintage-style fixtures that are based on American Standard’s original designs, with benefit of advanced high-performance technologies,” says Gary Uhl, director of design for American Standard.

Calling all ugly bathrooms

Homeowners who think their entire bathroom needs a vintage makeover are invited to submit a 100-word essay explaining why, along with photos of their current bathroom. The owner of the bathroom judged the ugliest will have the opportunity to choose American Standard products from its Standard or Retrospect collections.

Fixtures from the Standard Collection bring back some of the original Art-Deco designs made popular by American Standard in the 1920s, including vintage-style sinks, faucets, a bathtub, a toilet and accessories. The Retrospect Collection also brings back the strength and glamour of an earlier time with 1930s-inspired sinks, toilets and bathroom furniture pieces that combine comfort and reliability with classic simplicity and elegance. Both collections include virtually maintenance-free toilets featuring the Champion® flushing system, a unique design that allows consumers to toss out their plungers for good.

Calling all old American Standard toilets

Homeowners who believe they may have the oldest American Standard toilet are asked to submit a photo of their current toilet and a description of why they think it is the oldest. Only American Standard toilets are eligible, and all entries must include the toilet’s model number for verification purposes.

The owners of the American Standard toilet determined to be the oldest will receive a new toilet featuring the Champion flushing system, and may choose from six different models: The Oakmont Champion®, which features 1920s era detailing; the Doral Classic Champion®, Townsend which have angular profiles and refined traditional lines; or the Doral® Champion, Champion Select® or Champion One-Piece, all of which have a more transitional style that can adapt to a wide variety of design themes. All Champion models feature American Standard’s proprietary Flush TowerTM which releases 1.6 gallons of water in just 0.75 seconds, and its trademark upswept deck for simplified cleaning.
