Home Insulation Products that Minimize Your Energy Costs

Home insulation products are required for building comfortable homes no matter what part of the country you live in or the environment temperatures. Regardless if you are in a warm environment, humid area or cold wintery district environment, you will benefit by using the best insulation product required to minimize your energy costs and maintain a comfortable room temperature.

Consider the most common use of insulation in building, keeping the cold out and maintaining a comfortable environment in your home. Whether you use a gas or electric furnace, oil, coal or wood heating, propane or solar heating in your building, the heating costs will be significantly lower if you have insulated your home properly and made it an energy efficient building.

But it isn’t just the cold that needs to be kept out with proper insulation and heating. A warm climate environment requires air conditioning to be comfortable which also has high energy costs to run. A properly insulated building will keep the interior of your home comfortable and energy costs low if the insulation products have been applied to best maintain and keep your home cool when the outside temperatures are warmer than you prefer.

Think about how many different ways you can use insulation products to conserve energy in a building

  • Ceilings and attics
  • Basements and crawl spaces
  • Exterior walls
  • Windows and doors
  • Noise control and sound insulation

Insulation products come in various materials and it is important to understand what these products are and which are best for specific applications. Double paned windows and doors have become quite standard with most newer homes however if you can’t afford to replace older single pane windows consider adding a second interior window that will have the same effect. In winter climates you can also seal off windows and save up to 50% in heating costs with a plastic coating for a small cost and little bit of work.

All doors and windows should be properly sealed with weather stripping. Any exposed holes or cracks in walls or around doors and windows should be sealed with spray foam insulation. Sometimes a minor adjustment to a door catch or hinge can close a big gap or tighten up the weather stripping.

Ceilings and attics can have fiberglass batting, cellulose insulation products, blown-in fiber or foam sheeting. Check on the thickness recommended for maximum temperature control. Many homes with a crawl space or basement do not have insulation inserted in the floor joists. By adding this you will notice a considerable difference in the floor temperature, especially if it is hardwood or linoleum.

Ceiling fans can make a difference to the room temperature at any time of the year. Remember that the blade should turn to push the air upwards in the warmer seasons and push the warm air down in colder seasons. This can make a considerable difference for a comfortable room temperature, especially rooms with higher ceilings.

Don’t forget about soundproofing insulation. Whether you have a noisy home theater room, family room, music room or just outside noises that affect your peaceful environment, you may want to add some soundproofing to your walls.
