April 15, 2004 By: Daryl Marples Free Seminar to Feature Persian Rug Expert at The Metrolina Antiques & Fine Collectibles ShowFebruary 10, 2004 - Persian and Oriental Rug Expert and Dealer, Ali Zaker, will be the featured presenter at the The Metrolina Antiques & Fine Collectibles Show, Thursday, March 4th - Sunday, March 7th. During his presentation, "Buying Persian Rugs," he will speak about the history of Oriental and Persian rug and their weaving techniques; discuss the differences between the two types of rugs; talk about the different designs and types of rugs and their dying techniques; and discuss the depreciation of rugs (antique vs. semi old and new). He will also give tips on what to look for when buying rugs and on the maintenance and care of them. A native of Iran, Zaker has been in the Persian rug business for more than 17 years. His wife's family has been in the business for many generations in Iran and the United States and since joining them, Zaker has travelled around the country exhibiting at various antique shows, including The Metrolina Antiques & Fine Collectibles Show. He and his wife, Negar, also own Rugs in Line (RIL) a showroom and warehouse located in Marietta, GA, where they display and sell a huge selection of these decorative rugs. Iran (Persia) is known as the home of the original oriental carpet and was the pioneer of weaving antiques. Persian carpets and rugs are traditionally known for their great variety in design, color, size and weave but more importantly, for the uniqueness of each individual rug. The rugs are generally named after the village or town where they are woven or collected, or by the weaving tribe in the case of nomadic pieces. Each rug's particular pattern, palette and weave are uniquely linked with the indigenous culture, and weaving techniques are specific to a geographic area or nomadic tribe. The Metrolina Antiques & Fine Collectibles Show, the biggest monthly antique show in the Carolinas, is hosted the first weekend of every month by dmg world media. It features a wide array of fine antiques and vintage collectibles, including furniture accessories, lighting, garden accents, architectural ceramics, pottery, glass, silver, rugs, linens, textiles, books, fine art and sculptures, plus a huge selection of collectible depression glass, bottles, toys, militaria, sports memorabilia, entertainment mementos and much more. Each show also offers a free lecture series that features experts in the industry.
