DTS-NEO:6 Creates Stable Surround Sounds DVD Video from Stereo Sources

At AES Munich, DTS, the leader in digital surround sound for movies, home cinema, in-car entertainment and games, will be educating attendees about DTS-Neo:6, a sophisticated signal processing technology which creates stable and musically satisfying surround sound from stereo or matrixed stereo sources. Neo:6 is already incorporated into all high- and mid-end home theatre systems which include DTS-ES, the extended surround sound DVD audio environment.

In creating Neo:6, DTS developers used the latest algorithms and benefited from modern digital signal processing power to expand stereo for up to six full bandwidth channels. Where some steering information exists in other matrix formats it is used as a basis, but the main localisation comes from advanced sub-band signal processing. The aim is to provide a more satisfying listening experience.

Recognising that movies and music use surround sound in different ways, Neo:6 offers separate movie and music modes. The result is strong localisation of dialogue while expanding movie effects, and in music a subtler approach than other attempts to create surround from stereo, preserving the front panorama and enhancing it with the rear channels.

By accepting inputs from existing stereo DVDs, CDs, VHS players and off-air television, Neo:6 is expected to speed the take-up of surround sound in the home by allowing more sources to take advantage of the installation.
