November 04, 2003 By: Daryl Marples Polk Announces Atrium 65SDI Indoor/Outdoor Stereo Loudspeakers - World's First With Dual Inputs For Single Stereo Speakers or Conventional OperationPolk Audio announced the introduction of the Atrium 65SDI, the first indoor/outdoor stereo loudspeaker to feature single channel and dual channel inputs that allow it to operate either as a self-contained stereo speaker or as one channel in a stereo pair. This configuration provides consumers with the flexibility to configure a system to meet specific needs. A single Atrium 65SDI provides two channels of sound from a convenient single package. When used in pairs, Atrium 65SDIs deliver the kind of robust output needed to truly fill large spaces and the great outdoors with high quality stereo speakers sound. The unit has two 1" tweeters and one dual voice coil 6½" woofer. When in the Dual Input Mode, one tweeter is fed the Left channel; the other tweeter the Right channel, and the driver is fed both channels. In the Single Input Mode, both tweeters and the driver play one channel. Mode selection is accomplished by means of a switch that covers one set of input terminals when the unit is in the Single Input Mode, thereby preventing incorrect stereo speaker wiring and potential amplifier damage. The Atrium 65SDI is also the first outdoor-certified product to use patented Power Port venting technology that reduces turbulence at the mouth of the port. Power Port vastly reduces "chuffing" or "port noise" and provides deeper, more powerful bass with lower distortion and noise than conventional ported stereo speakers systems. In order to prevent water from entering through the port, Polk devised a clever "umbrella" design that allows water to roll away from the port mouth. A screen over the mouth of the Power Port prevents insects from entering the port. In extreme installations where the Power Port (on the back of the speaker) could be directly exposed to sprayed water, the supplied port plug can be inserted into the Port mouth to totally seal the stereo speakers system, albeit at the expense of bass output. So configured, the 65SDI is fully weatherproof and passes Military and ASTM standards for salt-fog, corrosion, and immersion. It is available in either black or white and features brass and stainless steel hardware, a swivel wall mount bracket, powder-coated aluminum grille, rubber driver surround, gold plated 5-way binding-posts and cabinet made of high-temperature, UV-protected polymer rated to beyond 175° F. The Atrium 65SDI equals or exceeds the weatherability standards of any music-quality outdoor stereo speakers on the market today. The Atrium 65SDI uses dual Titanium dome tweeters and a robust dual voice coil 6½" woofer. While well equipped for reliable outdoor use, its high-level audio performance and placement versatility makes the Atrium 65SDI ideal for a wide variety of indoor applications: as extension stereo speakers, surrounds in a Home Theater system, and as bar/restaurant speakers.
